ADA Accessibility Information

The Alabama Legislature is committed to full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Our goal is to provide an accessible legislative facility that includes reasonable access to applicable legislative activities such as legislative sessions and meetings, as well as an accessible legislative website that provides reasonable access to public information about legislative activities.

ADA Nondiscrimination Notice

In accordance with the requirements of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Alabama Legislature will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability in the provision of its services, programs, or activities.

State House Facility Access

For ease of access to the Alabama State House for individuals with physical disabilities that impair movement or that require wheelchair use, the Legislature provides dedicated parking spaces, a transportation drop-off point, a wheelchair-accessible entrance (including security screening), and dedicated seating spaces in the chamber galleries and in committee rooms (where applicable) for public hearings.

For general information, directions, or further guidance on State House Facility Access, or to request assistance with State House access, please contact the State House Visitor Information Desk using the contact information listed below.

Website Accessibility

The Alabama Legislature’s Website is designed and programmed to adhere to the standards required by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA.

Reasonable Accommodations and Modifications for Legislative Services, Programs, and Activities Generally

General Accommodations: The Alabama Legislature will generally, upon timely request, provide reasonably appropriate and available accessibility aids and services for qualified persons with disabilities to support effective communication and participation in the conducting of its public legislative services, programs, or activities. Such aids may include sign language interpreters, audio enhancements where available, or other communication assistance for qualified disabled individuals who have speech, hearing, or vision impairments.

Reasonable Modifications: In accordance with the ADA, the Alabama Legislature will make reasonable modifications to its general rules, practices, and procedures when necessary to avoid disability-based discrimination in the conducting of the Legislature’s public services, programs, and activities, unless such modification would fundamentally alter a program or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.  For example, qualified disabled individuals with service animals are welcomed in the Alabama State House, even though pets are generally prohibited.  Additionally, sign language interpreters, when available, may be provided upon timely request at no charge to qualified individuals with speech or hearing impairments.

For further information or to request accessibility assistance or accommodation regarding a particular legislative service, program, or activity, please contact the State House Visitor Information Desk using the contact information listed below.  To request a reasonable modification for a particular legislative service, program, or activity, please contact the applicable Agency ADA Coordinator using the contact information listed below.

When submitting an accommodation request via email or in writing, please include the following:

  • Name and contact information.
  • The event, service, or activity for which an accommodation for attendance or access is needed, including date, time, and location.
  • A detailed description of the accommodation requested.

Requests for accessibility assistance or reasonable accommodations should be made as far in advance as possible and, absent extraordinary circumstances, must be made no later than 48 hours prior to the scheduled service, program, or activity.

The Alabama Legislature does not charge additional fees or place surcharges on individuals with disabilities for the use of available accessibility aids or services provided by the Legislature under its rules, practices, and policies, or for the cost of reasonable accommodations provided by the Legislature to assist with the access or participation in its public legislative activities.

Employment Nondiscrimination Notice

The Alabama Legislature does not discriminate on the basis of disability in its hiring or employment practices and complies with all applicable regulations promulgated by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under Title I of the ADA.
